A Trailblazer of Civil Rights Dies Forgotten

A Trailblazer of Civil Rights Dies Forgotten

March 12, 2010

Neighbors were chagrined last week when the police here found the body of a 75-year-old woman who had frozen to death, alone in her house, during unexpectedly frigid weather. But they were shocked this week when they learned that the woman, Juanita W. Goggins, had been a civil rights trailblazer who in 1974 became the first black woman elected to the South Carolina legislature. Now residents of this normally neighborly Southern capital say they are feeling regretful, and slightly guilty, for allowing one of its most revered figures to disappear into a sleepy ranch house with little company. Possibly... [Read the full story]

In Early Tally, Tight Iraq Race Deepens Splits

In Early Tally, Tight Iraq Race Deepens Splits

March 12, 2010

Iraq’s major coalitions were locked in a surprisingly close race on Thursday, in initial results from elections that deepened divisions across a fractured landscape. Candidates were quick to charge fraud, heightening concerns whether Iraq’s fledgling institutions were strong enough to support a peaceful transfer of power. The day was the most tumultuous since Sunday’s vote for Parliament, with Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki’s office saying he underwent surgery, officials with his chief rival complaining that their ballots were dumped in the garbage, and a leading Shiite coalition... [Read the full story]

Democrats Struggle to Finish Health Bill

Democrats Struggle to Finish Health Bill

March 12, 2010

House and Senate Democratic leaders struggled Thursday to stitch together pieces of a final health care bill as rank-and-file Democrats demanded more information about the contents of the bill and its cost. Leaving a meeting of the House Democratic Caucus, lawmakers said they had received few details about what would be in the legislation, on which they may be asked to vote in the next week or two. “Everyone expressed frustration that we do not have comprehensive cost estimates from the Congressional Budget Office,” said Representative Gerald E. Connolly, Democrat of Virginia. In addition,... [Read the full story]

Obama Plans Florida Forum to Discuss NASA’s Future

March 10, 2010

President Obama will spell out his vision for the future of American astronauts in space at a conference that the administration is planning for Florida next month. That pleases Florida lawmakers, who have criticized the administration’s desire to eliminate NASA’s program to send astronauts back to the Moon. “The president’s upcoming space meeting here in Florida provides a chance for meaningful progress,” said Representative Suzanne M. Kosmas, whose district includes the Kennedy Space Center. She requested a meeting when she and others in the state Congressional delegation met last month... [Read the full story]

The Trouble With Milan

The Trouble With Milan

March 11, 2010

This season the road from the airport lounge to the fashion runway has been particularly short. After the “36 Hour Race” through the London shows, we survived a hectic and hysterical “Fashion Weekend” in Milan, where the calendar of presentations had been collapsed into three days of overlapping shows, impossible delays and events that went way into the night without any breaks for lunch or a sit-down dinner. “Heritage” was the key word of the weekend — or “maturity” as Suzy Menkes put it in a slightly positive light. It all started with a strong show by Miuccia Prada who shopped... [Read the full story]

Comeback Falls Short as U.S. Men’s National Team Defeated 2-1 to the Netherlands

Comeback Falls Short as U.S. Men’s National Team Defeated 2-1 to the Netherlands

March 4, 2010

The U.S. pressured the Netherlands late with three chances to tie the game in the closing minutes, but could not get the equalizer, falling 2-1 at Amsterdam ArenA in the final match before Bob Bradley selects his roster for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. After falling behind 2-0 in the 73rd minute, Carlos Bocanegra’s 12th career goal in the 88th minute provided the U.S. with its first-ever score against the Dutch, who had shut out the U.S. in three previous meetings. DaMarcus Beasley, who came on in the 34th minute for an injured Stuart Holden, assisted on the set piece goal after drawing... [Read the full story]

Nigerians Recount Night of Their Bloody Revenge

Dispassionately, the baby-faced young man recounted his killings: two women and one man, first beaten senseless with a stick, then stabbed to death with a short knife. The man, Dahiru Adamu, 25, was crouching on the floor in the sprawling police headquarters here, summoned to give an accounting of the terrible night of March 7, when, he said, he and... Read more of this article

Ravaged Nigerian Village Is Haunted by Latest Massacre

Ravaged Nigerian Village Is Haunted by Latest Massacre

Nightmare images haunt this dusty sun-baked village, fresh memories of tall young men emerging from darkness to slash the unarmed with long knives in a frenzy of ethnic and religious hatred. It was a particularly brutal massacre in a region in which thousands have died in the last decade in clashes between Muslims and Christians. On Tuesday, a day after... Read more of this article
